Handy-Dandy Folder Action scripts

06/15/2009 3:17 PM By Keith Strickland

I don't recall where I got these from, but they sure are handy. In Mac OSX, you can define a Folder Action script which will run anytime a file is added to that folder. Since I mess with Notes and we all know that it won't accept PNG images, we have to convert them to GIF or JPG. So after starting to make an Automator script to do this (This one is from Apple Inc.), I found an AppleScript that you enter as a folder action that will do your conversion for you and save a copy of the original image, pretty cool. You can find it in the Downloads menu over there on the left.

Another folder script that I created using the Automator scales an image. I guess you could ask what size to scale it to, but I've got it hard coded in the script. But this also works very well.

I hope you find these as useful and that they save you as much time as they save me.

Thanks for this post. I have only been using the Apple OS for a few months but have been very impressed.

On Windows, I use to use an automation tool called autoIT, which scripts things really well. I have not found the Mac automaton application to me too helpful, but you just gave me some ideas for converting images when using the grab utility.

Thanks

Glad to be of help. I too couldn't really find a reason to use Automator. But then I was resizing a bunch of images to put on one of the other websites I support and was thinking there had to be a better way to do this. So, a quick google search and I found a tutorial using the automator.

I've since created several scripts using it as it's quite easy to make it do what you want it to. Some of my other scripts include:
* Make a disk image of selected finder items
* Make an encrypted disk image of selected items
* Change file extensions of selected finder items

I think the automator is a great tool especially because of it's simplicity.
